Jul 31, 2015
When asked about the hiring of Coach Petroski, Athletic Director Mark Cartmill commented “Sonya will be a great addition to the Berea College coaching staff. Her experience working in the NCAA Division III level as well as her ability to build a program will be very beneficial as Berea continues its transition into the NCAA Division III.” Assistant Athletic Director Ryan Hess added “The Berea College athletic department is excited to have Sonya join our staff as head volleyball coach. She brings a wealth of experience coaching at different levels and her passion to teach the game while mentoring student-athletes is evident. Our student-athletes will benefit from her leadership on and off the court and I look forward to seeing the many contributions she will make in their lives and the life of our campus community.”
Sonya began her coaching career with the Atlantic Valley Volleyball Club in Westfield, N.J. where she served as the head coach of numerous teams, one of them winning a regional championship and another placing second. Petroski also assumed the role of assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach at New Providence High School (NJ). She then began working at Stevens Institute of Technology (NJ) as the assistant volleyball coach. While at Stevens the team saw the best record in program history and went to the NCAA DIII Elite Eight National Volleyball Tournament. In 2008 Petroski took over the program at her Alma Mater, Fort Scott Community College (KS). During her time there the program reached many milestones along with seeing the most successful seasons the program had since 2003.
In 2011 Petroski was hired to restart the women's volleyball program at the University of the Southwest (NM). Petroski rebuilt the program from the ground up and saw much success during her four years there. In her third season as head coach the young program saw post season play. Under her guidance, the volleyball program had a top 10 nationally ranked libero as well as multiple All-Conference athletes.
“I want to thank Director of Athletics, Mark Cartmill for this wonderful opportunity,” said Coach Petroski. “It is such an amazing honor to join the Berea family. I'm looking forward to meeting the team, they did so great last year and I want to build off of the solid foundation that has already been laid. We have 13 returning so I believe we have a great opportunity to do some amazing things this season. I can't wait to get in the gym with the team and hit the ground running. There are a lot of great things happening with Berea athletics and this is an exciting time to be part of it.” Along with her coaching appointment, Petroski will also serve as the Seabury Center assistant manger.
