The Berea College Athletic Department provides a certified athletic trainer for every home event and most Mountaineer practice sessions. Head Athletic Trainer Sandy Williams, MS, ATC, is in her 20th year at Berea College; while Brad Smith, MS, ATC is in his first year. They oversees a staff of student trainers and a graduate assistant, who provide care for the student-athletes in each of our 18 sports programs.
Sandy, Brad and their staff work closely with Berea College Health Service physicians Drs. Miriam David and Nancy Ryan, MD, as well as Dr. Trevor Wilkes, who is the Mountaineers team physician. Dr. Wilkes, a board certified orthopedic surgeon, is affiliated with Lexington Clinic Sports Medicine.
The athletic training room is located on the ground floor of the Seabury Center athletic complex and opens at 1:00 PM each weekday afternoon and as necessary on the weekends. Athletic trainers are usually at the competition site one hour before the game and remain one hour after the conclusion of each contest.
Teams visiting Berea College can expect to receive the following athletic training services:
- Certified athletic trainer on site
- Taping (supplies provided by your team) and stretching available prior to the start of the game
- Ice and ice bags will be available
- AED will be on site
- A 10-gallon cooler of water and cups will be provided
- Emergency response systems will be in place including access to EMS personnel and/or hospitals
If your team will be traveling without a certified athletic trainer, we require a written prescription form/letter provided from a certified athletic trainer before we can administer electrical modality treatments. In these instances, we request you provide us advance notice of your needs so that we can adequately prepare for your teams' arrival. The Berea College training staff strongly suggests visiting teams still bring a medical kit with them.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of our certified athletic trainers:
