Florence, KY: The Berea College Mountaineers handed the Mount St. Joseph Lions only their second loss of the season on Friday, winning by a score of 8-6.
The game began with Berea putting up some runs for starter Chad Brown, who has not had a ton of run support so far this season. Nathan Summey and Evan Hackney lit up the scoreboard for Berea early, allowing the Mountaineers to hold a 5-5 tie with MSJ by the time Brown left the game through four innings pitched.
Matt Wilburn came on for Berea in the top of the fifth, and shut the Lions down for his entire five inning bullpen run. Berea was able to scratch three runs off the eleventh pitcher for MSJ in the top of the ninth inning, which was given an exclamation point by Evan Hackney's double with two men on. Wilburn was able to only give up one run in the bottom of the ninth inning to escape with his first win of his college career, and Berea's fifth win of the season.
The Mountaineers are off until Friday, when they head south to take on the Hiawassee Tigers in Tennessee. For more information, be sure to follow the Berea College Athletics social media accounts.
