BEREA, KY- The Berea College Mountaineer baseball team swept the Alice Lloyd Eagles at home this Wednesday in a powerful showing of 13-2 and 12-3 in the two games.
The Mountaineers were dominant in their first game against their former rivals from the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, as they jumped out to a 4 run lead in the very first inning. Berea tacked on nine more runs, seven of which were in the fourth inning. Nolan Sanders threw very effectively in his first start of the season, giving up only two runs, which came off a home run by Patrick Barnett in the second inning. The Mountaineers made quick work of Alice Lloyd in the first game, and won by a score of 13-2 in five innings. Ryan Blevens went a perfect 3-3 with a sacrifice bunt and a steal, Evan Hackney tallied two hits and two runs, and Dallas Adkins had two hits with a stolen base and three runs batted in to power the Mountaineers to another win.
The second game was just as impressive of an offensive showing for Berea, as they got off to a five run lead over the first two innings. Starting pitcher Griffen Norris tossed five solid innings with the lead before walking a runner, hitting a runner, and giving up a home run to Barnett, his second of the day. Lance Shelton came in with the score at 6-3 in favor of the good guys, and effectively got out of the sticky situation. Berea plated 6 runs in the following inning to give them a 12-3 lead, and Shelton shut the door in the 7th to pick up his first save and extended Berea's win streak to 3. Evan Hackney went 3-4 with an RBI and two doubles, and Chase O'Connor had a perfect 3-3 game with two RBI's.
Berea's sweep puts them at 9-13 for the year. Berea has a chance to even their record up with a four game series against NCAA Division 2 Oakland City this weekend. Starters are yet to be announced.
