Berea Splits Second Asbury Doubleheader

Berea Splits Second Asbury Doubleheader

BEREA, KY- After an exciting first doubleheader in Wilmore, KY, the Berea College Mountaineer baseball team was back in action against the Asbury Eagles, winning the first game by a score of 3-1 and losing the second game by a margin of 7-5.

Game one featured Matt Wilburn on the bump for the Berea Mountaineers, and he was absolutely stellar in his start. Wilburn consistently hit 86-88 miles per hour on his fastball, and used it effectively to clip the wings of the Eagles in the first game. Wilburn went 7 innings, giving up only 4 hits, 1 run, and struck out two on his way to picking up his second win of the year. Nathan Summey, Ryan Blevens, and Chris Works all added perfect games at the plate, with Summey going 3-3, Blevens going 3-3 with a triple, and Works going 2-2, helping the Mountaineers get the three runs that they needed to pull away from the Eagles for their second win in a row, being Asbury 3-1. That win, their 12th, ties their win total from last season.

Game two ended up as a bit of a disappointment for Berea. Chris Works took a leave of absence from his usual shortstop position to start on the mound for the Mountaineers. Works went a strong 5 innings, and left with the score 5-4 in favor of Berea. Tyler Plageman came through in the early goings and knocked two RBI's in on two singles, and Devin Belleville added to his great day by going 1-2 with an RBI and a sacrifice bunt. Cord Glass came in relief of Works in the top of the 6th, and exited after a hit and a sacrifice bunt. Chase O'Connor came in to close in the save situation, and got out of the 6th inning with the lead intact.  The seventh inning proved fatal for Berea, however, as O'Connor gave up a lead off triple, which was brought in by a play at the plate error on the collision by the catcher. Two walks and a two RBI single later, and the Mountaineers found themselves suddenly down 7-5, which is the final score of game two.

The Mountaineers tough split Asbury is the last four game set they will play this season. They will play two at Alice Lloyd on Tuesday, and three against Hiwassee at home on this upcoming senior celebration weekend.
