Berea, KY - The Berea College Mountaineers returned home this evening to take on the Union College Bulldogs. Union enters tonight's match up as the 6th ranked team in the Division II NAIA Polls.
In the first half both teams came out ready to play. Berea took an early lead to begin the game but by the 13:38 mark the score was tied at 14-14. After exchanging points, Union scored back to back baskets to take a 21-17 lead with 10:50 left in the first half. Berea gained some momentum by cutting the Union lead down to three points at 28-25 before the Bulldogs scored two quick baskets to extend the lead back to seven, 32-25. Union continued to hold the momentum and stretch their lead to nine with 2:25 remaining until halftime. A last second three point shot by Ethan Harris put the Mountaineers down 51-43 at the half.
At the start of the second half the Mountaineers went on an 8-3 run to pull them within three points with 16:00 left to play in the game. Shortly after, Union responded with a run of their own and increased their three point lead to eleven with 12:47 left to play. A pair of back to back baskets and a Jair Jackson layup would bring Berea back within five points, 67-62. Dominique Garmon's jump shot with 5 minutes left in the game cut the Mountaineers deficit to only three. With 1:57 left in the game, Parker got a steal and drove the length of the court to bring the score to 78-75, Union. In a hard fought effort, the Mountaineers came up short losing to the Bulldogs by a score of 85-77.
Three Berea players scored in double digits for the game. Leading the way for the Mountaineers was Parker with 28 points. The other players in double figures was Anthony Myrks with 17, including 7-10 from the free throw line, and Garmon with 10 points. Jair Jackson led Berea under the glass with nine total rebounds, with four of those being offensive rebounds.
The Mountaineers return to the court this Sunday, December 13th against Ohio Mid-Western College. Tip off for the game is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
