Berea, Ky. – Berea College men's basketball fell to Mount St. Joseph 71-67 Tuesday night at the Seabury Center.
Berea (2-2) was led by senior guard Anthony Myrks-Brewer who scored a team-high 25 points and grabbed four rebounds while freshman guard Nick McCollum netted 12 points off the bench for the home team.
The first half was tightly challenged, as the Mountaineers and MSJ traded the lead back-and-forth for much of the first half. Anthony Myrks-Brewer led the way for Berea in the first half, going 7-for-11 from the floor to lead all scorers with 15 first half points. The Mountaineers looked to take a 35-32 lead into half until Myrks-Brewer extended the lead following a buzzer-beating layup to give Berea a 37-32 advantage to close out the first half.
The Mountaineers struggled to start the first half, as MSJ went on a 4-0 run in the first 2:27, cutting the lead to 37-36 and forcing a Berea timeout. MSJ scored quickly after the break, giving the visitors a 38-37 lead with about 16:00 remaining in the contest. The trouble continued for Berea as a technical foul allowed MSJ to hit one-of-two from the free throw line to extend its lead further to 39-37.
The Mountaineers scoreless run ended with about 13:30 remaining in the game as McCollum hit a three to reclaim the lead, making the score 40-39. Berea lost the lead again as MSJ went on a 9-2 run to give the visitors a 48-42, forcing a timeout from the home team with 11:07 left in the game. The Mountaineers clawed their way back, cutting the visitor's lead to 68-64 after an impressive run to force a MSJ timeout with 40 seconds remaining in the contest. The late-game surge was not enough as the home squad dropped its second game of the contest.
