Berea, KY- Tonight was the opening game of the Berea College Holiday Inn Express Classic at the Seabury Center. Fans in attendance and on the Berea College Sports Network saw the Mountaineers take on the visiting Royal Crusaders of Crown College (TN) on the Roland Wierwille Court.
The score was tied 2-2 in the opening minutes of the game before Berea went on a 14-6 run to take a 17-8 advantage. A pair of free throws from Richard Parker gave the Mountaineers their first double digit lead of the game at the 10:49 mark, 24-14. Strong shooting from the field (45%) along with 10 forced turnovers by the tough Berea defense allowed the team to hold Crown to just five points over the last ten minutes of the half, while the Mountaineers scored 25 points in the same span to go into halftime ahead 49-19.
The senior tandem of Anthony Myrks-Brewer and Parker scored the first nine points of the half for Berea before a Stephen Butts three-point jump shot and Gabe Hinton's layup finished the 14-0 scoring rally to open the second half, giving the team a 63-19 lead with 14:31 remaining in the game. Berea took their largest lead of the game of 50 points at the 5:20 mark when Hinton rebounded Butts missed three-point attempt and made a jump shot to put the team ahead 81-31. The team went on to win by 44 points, 96-52, in the opening night of the Berea College Holiday Inn Express Classic.
Five Mountaineers finished in double figures in the game as Parker led the way with 26, followed by Myrks-Brewer (19), Butts (15), Terique Miller (10) and Dyonta Bizzle-Brown (10). Austin Glasgow finished as the assist leader for the game with eight. Berea finished with 14 steals on the game, four of which were credited to Myrks-Brewer and outrebounded the Royal Crusaders 56-24. The Mounties scored 23 second chance points off of 24 offensive rebounds and 31 points off of 19 turnovers.
Tomorrow night on the Roland Wierwille Court, the second game of the Berea College Holiday Inn Express Classic takes place as Crown College will be the home team against Oakland City University at 7:00 PM.
Berea plays their final game of the Berea College Holiday Inn Express Classic this Saturday, December 3rd against the Oakland City University Mighty Oaks. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00.
