Lexington, KY – The Berea College men's soccer team traveled to Lexington, KY to play in the Transylvania Soccer Showcase over the weekend. The Mountaineers started the season 2-0-0 but went 0-2 in the showcase dropping their record to 2-2-0.
Berea dropped their first game 0-3 on Saturday, September 5th against the host Transylvania. The Transylvania offense was just too much as they outshot the Mountaineers 27 to 2. The first goal was scored by Transylvania at 23:12 into the first half with a shot from the right side that found the left corner of the goal. The rest of the half would go scoreless and the Mountaineers found themselves at a 0-1 deficit going into the half.
The second half started much like the first with Transylvania controlling the ball on their end taking several shots on goal but none finding the net. Then at the 62:12 and 82:27 marks Transylvania struck again scoring two more goals making the final score 0-3, Transylvania.
On day two of the shootout Berea faced Hanover in a valiant effort that resulted in double overtime loss for the Mountaineers.
Hanover struck first in the 32nd minute and took a 1-0 lead. That would remain the score for the rest of the first half. In the 56th minute Berea's Pedro Herrera was assisted by Jesse Massuccoo to put the Mountaineers on the board and tying the game 1-1.
The teams would play through the full ten minutes of the first overtime forcing a second one. In the second overtime Hanover scored an unassisted goal with only 2:04 left to play gaining their first win of the season and giving Berea its second lose.
Hanover out shot Berea 17-7 and had an 8-5 advantage on corner kicks.
Berea returns to action Tuesday, September 8th with a home match against Boyce College.
