Berea Goes 0-2 against Wittenberg and Maryville (TN) at Wilmington Kiwanis Classic

Wilmington, OH – Berea Men's Soccer traveled to Ohio to play in the Kiwanis Classic this past weekend.  The men were unable to grab a win and returned to Berea with a 3-4-0 record.

The game against Wittenberg was pretty evenly matched, with the score going back and forth several times throughout the game. The final score was not in favor of the Mountaineers as they lost 4-3.

Berea succeeded in staying ahead at first, with Pedro Herrera scoring the first goal less than 6 minutes into the game, assisted by Rafael Mendoza. Berea's Brad Camenisch scored unassisted at the 16:30 mark of the first half. Wittenberg scored for the first time at 27:38. A penalty kick by Wittenberg's Josh McErlean tied the score to 2-2 at halftime.

After Wittenberg scored 7 minutes into the second half, Berea fought back by scoring again at minute 64, tying it up once more.  This time was Kevin Cuartas assisted by Pedro Herrera. With overtime looking like a possibility, Wittenberg managed to score the last point of the game at 65:20, cancelling that chance.

On the defensive side, Berea had 10 saves and Wittenberg only had 1.

For offense, Berea had 6 shots and Wittenberg had 22.

The second game against Maryville College wasn't as close as the Scots put up two goals in the first 15 minutes of the game giving them a 2-0 lead heading into the half.  The second half did not go any better for the Mountaineers as Maryville was able to put up 2 more goals making the final score 4-0, Maryville.  Berea was only able to put up 4 shots compared to the Scots 27. 

Two members of the Mountaineer squad were named to the All-Tournament team.  Those players were Senior Forward Jesse Massucco and Freshman Goalie Noah DeHart

The Mountaineers will play at Franklin on Friday, September 18 with kickoff scheduled at 7:00 PM.
