Berea, KY- The conclusion of the USA South Conference doubleheader which began with the women's soccer team saw the men's team take the field for their game. The visitors to the Berea College Sports Complex were the Piedmont College Lions.
Three quick shots by Piedmont were kept out of the net by the defense and goalkeeper of the Mountaineers. A shot by Christopher Malpartida which would have gave Berea a 1-0 lead was not on target as it went high over the goal. The first goal of the game went in favor of the Lions in the 22nd minute to give them a 1-0 lead. Seven minutes before the end of the first half, Piedmont added their second goal of the contest to give them a 2-0 lead at the intermission.
Berea saw the deficit move to 4-0 within the first nine minutes of the second half. As the Mountaineers tried to continue to kick start their offense, the Lions added a fifth goal at the 64:24 mark. Berea took a goal away from the deficit on a goal by Malpartida in the 71st minute. The comeback rally by the Mountaineers would fall short as Piedmont walked off the field with a 5-1 victory. Malpartida led the team with two shots, one of which was a goal. The goalie combination of Noah Dehart and Nicholas Knoster saved three shots on goal.
The field at the Berea College Sports Complex will see the Mountaineers come back on Wednesday for another USA South Conference game. The team will host West division opponent Maryville College (Tenn.) with a scheduled kickoff at 7:00 PM.
