Mountaineers Open Cross Country Season With Win

Berea, KY – The men's cross country team opened up their season at home with the 1st annual Berea/Centre College Jamboree.  The Mountaineers finished 1st out of the 10 scoring teams, 45 points ahead of 2nd place University of the Cumberlands.  Berea posted an impressive 16:06 team average on the 5k course. 

The Mountaineers placed 6 runners in the top 20 with senior Jeremy Johnson pacing the way.  Johnson finished 3rd overall with a blazing time of 15:43.  Logan McKenzie and Isaiah Dodson were also able to crack the 16:00 minute barrier.  McKenzie finished 5th overall with a time of 15:48 and Dodson finished in 6th running 15:55.  Berea Showed their depth with Dylan Watkins finishing in 11th (16:31), Casey Monti in 12th (16:33) and Kyle Young in 13th (16:35).  Other finishers for Berea were Raymond McKinney finishing 23rd (16:54), Nathan Smith 31st (17:06), Corbin Flege 45th (17:32), Dakota White 46th (17:34), Landon Bond 55th (17:53), Matthew Sargent 74th (18:34), Edwin Lemus 76th (18:36) and Jose Gonzalez in 97th (20:21).

The Mountaineers and Colonels started a new tradition at the 1st annual Berea/Centre meet.  The two teams were scored separate as a dual meet and the winner was awarded with "the cup".  This trophy will travel back to the winner's campus each year.  The trophy will stay in Berea this year as the Mountaineers topped the Colonels 17-45 in the dual meet team scoring. 

"The men really showed up and ran a great race" said assistant coach Shawn Jakubowski.  "We knew coming in there was going to be some really good competition in the team race.  Many runners stepped up and we even had some PR's.  I look foraward to seeing how we compete in our first 8k race next week at Centre."
The Mountaineers are back in action next Saturday, September 10th when they travel to the Centre College Invitational.
