After having 12 games postponed because of multiple snow storms and rain, the softball team was finally able to return to the field as they hosted the University of the Cumberlands Patriots for a doubleheader.
Game 1- The game looked like it was going to be a pitching duel as both teams struggled to reach base during the first inning. In the bottom of the second inning, Mercedes Stanfield reached on a walk and moved into scoring position but was cut down trying to advance on a single by Sarah Haycraft. The Patriots broke through first in the third inning as they collected five of their eight hits, scoring four runs. Berea would put a run on the board when Kari Kviten scored in the fourth off a double from Morgan McClure. The Mountaineers would be unable to mount a comeback as they were held hitless for the rest of the game, eventually falling 4-1.
Berea scored one run on four hits and committed no errors. Senior Victoria Sergent collected the loss, pitching all seven innings, giving up eight hits, four runs (one earned), and striking out two batters while walking three. Morgan McClure led the Mountaineers in offense, going 2-3 with one RBI and one double.
Katelyn Blair pitched a complete game, taking the loss, allowing one run, posting five strikeouts and no walks. The Mountaineers committed one error and picked up three hits. Kviten led Berea offensively, going 2-3.
Berea falls to 1-3 on the season and will be back in action Saturday as they are scheduled to play Franklin College in a doubleheader. Game times are scheduled to be 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
