The softball team returned to the field today to take on the visiting Mighty Oaks of Oakland City University in a doubleheader.
Game 1- The Mountaineers would get off to a quick start in the first game of the doubleheader. After two strikeouts from pitcher Katelyn Blair and a fly out to left field, Berea's offense would take flight. Hannah Carter would reach first base off a bunt and advance to second base on the next pitch because of a wild pitch. Kari Kviten would take the next pitch to shallow center field, advancing Carter to third base. After Kviten stole second base, Mercedes Stanfield would step up to the plate and hit a single to left field which would result in Carter and Kviten both scoring, giving the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the third inning, Morgan McClure would hit a double which would bring in Stanfield for another run only to be followed by a blast hit by Sarah Haycraft that would fly over the fence and result in a two-run home run, extending the Berea lead to 5-0. The Mountaineers would add one more run in the fourth inning before going on to win 6-1.
Berea scored six runs on 15 hits and committed no errors. Katelyn Blair pitched all seven innings, allowing one run on seven hits, collecting eight strikeouts and no walks for her first win of the season. The offense was led by Sarah Haycraft, who went 1-3 with one HR and two RBIs.
Game 2- Berea would once again get off to a quick start in game two of the doubleheader. The leadoff hitter for the Mountaineers, Allie Newton, would single to shallow center field and quickly advance her way to third base, stealing two bases. Carter would bring Newton in to score when she hit a double to left field. After stealing a base to advance to third, Carter would get to home base to score after a ground out from Stanfield. The offense for the Blue Crew would cool down a little bit as only one more run would be added by McClure off a Haycraft double. Berea would win 3-0 and complete the doubleheader sweep.
Victoria Sergent would collect her second win of the season, pitching all seven innings, with six strikeouts, two walks and only allowed four hits. Berea would score three runs on seven hits, led in offense again by Haycraft, going 2-3 with two doubles and one RBI.
The Mountaineers move to 3-3 on the season and return to action next Saturday, March 28th as they host Kentucky Christian University in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM for game one and 3:00 PM for game two.
