#10 Softball Uses Eight Run First Inning to Defeat Centre College 10-2

The softball team returned to the field for the first time after learning of their #10 ranking in the USCAA against Centre College. Originally scheduled to play a doubleheader against the Colonels, weather forced the teams to change to a single game, and the Mountaineers took advantage of the opportunity to play the game.

The first batter of the game for Berea grounded out to second base but the next three batters for the Mountaineers reached base as Morgan McClure stepped up to the plate. With the bases loaded, McClure blasted a ball over a fence to hit a grand slam, her team leading third home run of the season and give the team a 4-0 lead. The scoring would not stop there as Sarah Haycraft scored on a Cheyenne Moran RBI single, Moran and Victoria Sergent scored on a throwing error and Allie Newton added the eighth run of the inning on a second throwing error. The Mountaineers ended the top of the first inning leading 8-0.

After recording her team leading eighth stolen base of the season, Newton scored the ninth run of the game for the Blue Crew off a Kari Kviten's RBI single in the top of the third inning. The Mountaineers led the game 9-1 going into the bottom of the third until Centre added another run to the board to change the score to 9-2. The Colonels would not add another run to the board but Berea added a 10th run on a fielder's choice, which McClure would score on. The Mountaineers closed the game out in five inning with a winning score of 10-2 as the Colonels would be unable to extend the game as the defense held the Colonels scoreless in the bottom of the fourth and fifth inning.

Sergent got her fourth win of the season, pitching all but one inning. Sergent allowed four hits, two runs, walked two batters and struck out five. The team combined for 10 hits on the Centre College pitchers, scoring 10 runs on those hits. McClure led the team in offense, going 1-2 with one home run and four RBIs, giving her 14 RBIs on the season, tied for first with Mercedes Stanfield.

Berea (6-9) heads back on the road for their next game action as they visit Kentucky Christian University to play a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
