In their second match up of the day, the #8 seeded Berea College softball team was facing the #1 seeded Pomeroys of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.
The Mountaineers got off to slow start as the first three batters in the game were forced out. The Pomeroys took the lead in the first inning as they put two runs on the board to make the score 2-0. The offense for both teams would go stagnant until the bottom of the third inning when St. Mary-of-the-Woods added two more runs to the board to take a 4-0 lead. The offenses for both team again went stagnant after the bottom of the third inning. At the end of the fifth inning, the game was forced into a weather delay because of lightning and a thunderstorm which followed.
After the delay, which lasted an hour, the continuation of the game began with the top of the sixth inning and the offense came alive for the Blue Crew. Hannah Carter and Cheyenne Moran each singled to reach base. With Carter on second and Moran on first, Kari Kviten came to plate and hit a two RBI double, bringing Carter and Moran home to make the score 4-2. The pitching and defense of the Mountaineers made quick work of the first three batters in the bottom of the sixth inning to set up a top of the seventh inning where Berea needed to add at least two runs to extend the game. The Blue Crew were unable to add the runs needed to extend the game though as the Pomeroys went on to win the game 4-2.
The offense, which combined for four hits and two runs, was led by Kviten, who was 1-3 with one double and two RBIs. Katelyn Blair pitched the entire game for Berea, giving up five hits, four runs, walking four batters while striking out six.
With the tournament being double-elimination, the loss moves the Mountaineers into the bottom bracket of the 2015 USCAA National Championship and sets up a rematch between the team Berea ended the season with, #10 University of Cincinnati-Clermont. Berea played the Cougars the last weekend of the regular season, winning both games of the doubleheader 8-0 and 11-1, each in five innings. The first pitch for the matchup is set for 12:00 PM today.
