Petroski Named Head Softball Coach

BEREA, KY- The former assistant coach of the Berea College Mountaineer softball team, Chris Petroski, was named the new head coach after long-time coach Rusty Whittamore retired from the position earlier this summer.

Petroski, husband of head Berea College volleyball coach Sonya Petroski, is entering his second year of working with Berea College. His first season as assistant coach under Rusty Whittamore had its share of ups and downs, which could be reflective of the team's tough NCAA DIII schedule. Berea went 13-20 overall, ending on a six-game winning streak to close out the season.

Unfortunately, the Mountaineers were unable to make the USCAA National Tournament, in which they had finished 2nd the year before. "We saw a lot of ups and downs this past season," Petroski said.  "We struggled with some injuries but, all in all, I think it was a success…I established great relationships with these players, and there are some strong recruits coming in this year.  We look forward to continuing to build a strong program."

Chris has worked in softball for several years, originally as a player. Chris began playing men's fast-pitch softball in 2002 and has been playing ever since. He caught on with the Rio Grand Alliance, a team based in Midland, Texas, in 2011, where he has enjoyed much success. As a coach he led the Hobbs High School softball team in Hobbs, New Mexico, to a 55-14 record over a three-year time period, with his team making it to the state tournament every year.

When asked about taking over the helm for the Berea College softball team, Petroski stated, "I have big plans for the program. We have the potential to be one of the strongest programs around, so I am going to strive to bring us that reputation. I'm excited for what the future will bring for this program."

Chris and Sonya currently reside in Berea with their dog, Ally. For more information on Chris, the Mountaineer softball team, and all of Berea Athletics, make sure to follow our social media pages @Berea_Athletics on Twitter, and the Berea Athletics Facebook page.
