BEREA, KY – The Mountaineers grabbed a convincing, 80-60 win over Indiana University Southeast in their season home-opener.
IU-Southeast took advantage of a slow start by Berea, getting on the board first. After taking several minutes to settle in, the Mountaineers posted their first points of the game when freshman Erica Rogers hit a three-pointer to tie the game, 3-3. The Mountaineers struggled through the remainder of the first quarter, getting outscored, 17-8, by an aggressive Grenadiers team.
The tables turned in the second quarter with Berea coming out strong. The Mountaineers got the momentum rolling early in the quarter with Jaime Roberts and Bethanie Williams both hitting shots from behind the arc. A few possessions later, the Mountaineers tied up the game, until Roberts hit a free throw to give Berea a 25-24 lead. Unhappy with only a one-point lead, Adriana Williams recorded a steal and took it straight to the basket for a lay-up. The Mountaineers headed into the locker room for halftime off a 3-point buzzer beater by Roberts, putting them up, 33-25.
Berea came out ready to play in the third, showing focus, along with great ball movement. On two straight Mountaineer possessions, Erica Rogers hit three-point shots off of consecutive assists by Adriana Williams. Both, Williams and Rogers also grabbed steals, which they converted into lay-ups. The Mountaineers finished out their highest scoring quarter with a 62-39 lead.
The Mountaineers found themselves in foul trouble in the fourth quarter, with three players having four. Two players would ultimately foul out, but Berea held it together, posting 18 more points. Rogers led the team with 19 points, while Zacchea Small led the Mountaineers in rebounds with nine and Adriana Williams had team-high six assists.
Berea returns to action on Tuesday, November 17th when they will play Alice Lloyd on the road in Pippa Passes, KY at 7:00 PM.
