Mountaineers Fall Short Against Pioneers

Berea, KY – The Berea College women's basketball team returned home this evening to take on NCAA DIII Transylvania University.  In a valent effort the Mountaineers fell short to the Pioneers by a score of 71-68.

In the first quarter Transylvania shot out to a quick 23-10 lead with 1:20 left in the quarter.  The Pioneers ended the quarter on top 25-12.  The story continued for the Mountaineers in the second quarter as they continued to struggle hitting shots.  Berea would go into the half down 39-30.  The Pioneers shot 45% compared to the Mountaineers 33%.  The leading scorer for the Mountaineers was Adriana Williams with 9 points.  She also added 3 rebound, 2 assists and a steal to her first half stats. 

In the third quarter Berea cut the lead to as little as seven but the Pioneers stole the momentum back and pushed their lead out to a game high of seventeen.  The Pioneers outscored Berea in the third quarter 16-12.  Berea once again rallied back and cut the lead to eight with only six minutes remaining in the game.  A three point basket by freshman Erica Rogers would put Berea down by only one point with 3:19 on the clock.  The Pioneers once again had a quick answer and would hit a layup to bring their lead back to three.  A quick Mountaineer basket, followed by a Kelsey Tippitt steal would give possession back to Berea.  Williams drew a foul and went 1-2 at the line to tie the game 66-66.  Transylvania would eventually take 69-66 lead with only thirty seconds left in the game.  With Berea trailing by three Kelsey Tippitt would get fouled after a made layup.  Tippitt was unable to hit the free-throw to tie the game and Berea was forced to foul in an attempt to extend the game.  The Pioneers would hit both Free-throws to give them a three point lead with only five seconds remaining.  Berea inbounded the ball to Roger's who 's last second three point attempt was blocked at the buzzer to give Transylvania the 71-68 win.

Williams led the Mountaineers with 24 points and 3 steals.  Rogers shot 4-7 from the three and ended the game with 16 points.  Leading the Mountaineers under the glass was Jamie Roberts with 8 total rebounds.

Berea will be back in action at home on Saturday, November 28th when they take on Taylor University at 1:00 PM.
