Berea, KY - The Berea College women's basketball team travelled to Danville last night to take on NCAA DIII opponent Centre College. After a back and forth game the Mountaineers were able to grab the 61-52 win over the Colonels.
In the first quarters both teams came out ready to play and for most of the quarter the score traveled back and forth. With 2:43 left to play in the quarter Adriana Williams hit a layup to put the Mountaineers up 11-10. Berea would lead for the rest of the quarter and finish with a 16-13 lead going into the second quarter.
In the second quarter the Colonels came out ready to play and less than two minutes in the second quarter they would regain the lead with a three point shot. At the 6:31 mark Erica Rogers hit a three pointer to put the Mountaineers back up by one, 21-20. After losing the lead again the Mountaineers would go on a eight point run to go up 31-23 with only 31 seconds remaining in the half. Centre would score one other basket in the half giving the Mountaineers a 31-25 point advantage going into the half.
In the third quarter the Colonels would fight their way back. The Colonels would go on a 13-2 run to take a 38-36 lead over the Mountaineers with 6:21 left to play in the quarter. The score would once more travel back and forth for the remainder of the quarter and with nine seconds left in the third Rogers hit a three point shot to give the Mountaineers a 43-41 point lead going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter Centre came out strong and scored the first eight points of the quarter giving them a 49-43 point lead. The Mountaineers defense forced four straight turnovers that would help them regain the lead with 4:16 left in the game. The Colonels would tie the game once more before a jump shot by Rogers and made free throw by Anna Loveless would put Berea back up by three. The Mountaineers forced two more turnovers in the last three minutes of the game to secure a 61-52 win.
Berea finished the game with three players scoring in the double digits. Rogers ended with 19, Adriana Williams had 14 and Bethanie Williams finished with 10. Adriana also picked up a team high 6 steals on the night.
Berea will travel to New Albany, IN on December 4th to take on Indiana University Southeast. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
