Berea Falls Short to Trine on Day One of the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament

Wilmington, OH - The Berea College women's basketball team headed north over break to play in the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament hosted by Wilmington College.  On the first day of action the Mountaineers took on the Trine University Thunder.  In a hard fought game the Mountianeers fell to the Thunder by a score of 72-63.

After the first quarter of play the Mountaineers found themselves down 15-10 to the Thunder.  A 7-2 Thunder run to start the second quarter pushed their lead to ten with 8:01 left to play in the half. In the last eight minutes of play Jaime Roberts drained two three point shots to spark a 9-0 Mountaineer run and by the end of the first half Berea was able to cut the deficit to only only three, 28-25.  

With seven minutes to play in the third quarter the Mountaineers took their first lead since the start of the game, 35-34.  Berea held the the lead most the quarter but a late surge by the Thunder gave them a 51-48 advantage going into the forth and final quarter.  The Mountaineers came out ready to play in the final quarter and a 9-2 early run would give them a four point lead, but six-straight by the Thunder gave Trine the lead right back. With 4:54 left to play Adriana Williams hit a layup to tie the game 59-59 but the Thunder had all the momentum in the final minutes of the game and outscored the Mountaineers 13-4 to get the 72-63 win.

Three Mountaineers scored in the double digits this evening.  Jaime Roberts led the Berea with 16 points.  Roberts went 4-7 from behind the arc and tied the tournament record for most threes in a game.  Adriana Williams recorded 15 points, 4 assists and 3 steals.  The third Mounatineer to score in the double digits was Kelsey Tippitt who came off the bench to score 11 points.  

Berea will be back in action for day two of the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament on January 3rd where they will face Kenyon University at 1:00 PM.
