Women's Basketball Moves Winning Streak to Four with 41-36 Victory Against OCU

Circleville, OH- Before Winter Storm Jonas hit the Bluegrass, the women's basketball team went on the road to take on Ohio Christian University. The Mountaineers entered the game on a three game winning streak.

The game, which turned into a defensive struggle with neither team shooting better than 24% for the game, started off with a Berea 2-0 lead off an Adriana Williams jump shot. From there, the two teams exchanged the lead back and forth and tied two different times before OCU took the lead for the rest of the quarter, gaining as high as a four point lead. The Mountaineers went into the second quarter facing a two point deficit, 13-11.

The second quarter highlighted the defense for both teams, as they combined for 10 total points in the quarter. Jaime Roberts scored the only two points for Berea in the quarter at the 7:18 mark, making the score 18-13, advantage OCU. The Mountaineers went into halftime facing a 21-13 deficit.

The offense which was missing for Berea in the second quarter appeared in the third quarter, as they team came out of the break looking to cut into the eight point lead OCU maintained. Bethanie Williams began slashing the lead with her three point basket just 24 seconds into the quarter, followed by Adriana Williams' basket, which made the score 21-18, making the deficit just three. But OCU scored the next seven points to push their lead out to a game high 10 points. The Mountaineers eventually battled their way back and went into the fourth quarter down 30-26.

The offense continued to pour out in the fourth quarter for Berea as the team took the lead off of two back to back Bethanie Williams three point baskets, making the score 32-30, Berea. Over the next four minutes of the game, OCU tied the game twice but the Mountaineers never gave up the lead and played strong defense to win the game 41-36. Adriana Williams led the team in scoring with 14 points while also collecting five steals and three assists. Bethanie Williams also finished with double digits in scoring with 12, going 3-5 from behind the arc. Roberts led the team in rebounds with 10.

With the win, the team moves to 11-7 on the season and increases their winning streak to four. The team returns to action on Thursday January 28th when they take on the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, KY. Action is scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM.
