Georgetown, KY- Forty-eight hours after playing their final home game of the season, the women's basketball went on the road to play their regular season finale. The team traveled to Georgetown, KY to take on the Tigers of Georgetown College looking to add another victory to their tournament resume.
Berea missed their first three shots of the game and found themselves down 4-0 before Adriana Williams connected on the first field goal for the team at the 7:40 mark. The shots once again would not fall for the Mountaineers as Georgetown used a 12-2 run to take a 16-4 lead with 3:41 left in the first quarter. Berea cut the Tigers 12 point lead in half over the next few minutes as a three point basket from Jaime Roberts and a three point play from Zacchea Small made the score 16-10 in favor of Georgetown with 1:53 left in the first quarter. The Mountaineers looked as if they were going into the first quarter break down by 10, but a made basket from beyond the arc by Anna Loveless kept the Tigers' lead to just single digits, 21-13.
Georgetown began the second quarter with a three point basket to give them a double digit lead, but Bethanie Williams made field goal and an offensive rebound put back by Loveless quickly cut the lead back down to just seven, making the score 24-17, with 8:40 left in the first half. A pair of free throws by the Tigers put them on top of Berea by 12 before the Mountaineers went on a 8-0 scoring streak, with a field goal by Bethanie Williams and back-to-back three point baskets from Roberts, to cut the deficit to just four, 29-25, with 5:38 before the halftime buzzer. Georgetown got another two points from the charity stripe to extend the lead back to six, but Roberts' eighth straight point and a basket from Adriana Williams made the Tigers' lead just two, 31-29, at the 4:20 mark. Berea could not capitalize on the momentum though as Georgetown used a 9-2 scoring advantage to go into halftime with a 40-31 lead.
The Tigers came out in the beginning of the third quarter and continued to hold their lead, pushing it to as high as 14 at the 6:02 mark with the score 47-33. Roberts' jump shot only a few seconds later got the motors running for the Mountaineers though as they used a 13-4 run to narrow the deficit to just five with 1:46 remaining until the final quarter. Georgetown hit the last jump shot of the quarter to enter the fourth quarter with a 53-46 lead.
The deficit Berea faced quickly shot up to double digits as the Tigers opened the quarter with a made basket beyond the arc. Adriana Williams split a pair of free throws to get the Georgetown advantage back to single digits, but two straight baskets from the Tigers pushed their lead back to double figures, 60-47. With 6:15 remaining until the final buzzer, Adriana Williams completed a three point play to cut the deficit to eight, making the score 62-54, before Georgetown scored the next five points to push their lead back out to 13. The Mountaineers rallied back from being down by double digits twice over the remaining minutes of the game but could not complete the comeback attempt as the Tigers took the the decision 75-65.
Leading the way on the offensive end for Berea was Jaime Roberts and Adriana Williams, who each finished the game with 20 points. Roberts scored 12 points from behind the arc as she shot 4-6 behind the three point line. Anna Loveless paced the Mountaineers on the glass with nine rebounds, four coming from the offensive side. Adriana Williams also finished with five steals while Bethanie Williams led the team in assists with six.
Berea finishes the regular season with a 14-11 record and ranked #3 in the most recent polls. The team now awaits bid day on Wednesday, February 24th to see if they get an at-large bid to the USCAA Basketball National Championship. The broadcast for the selection show can be heard here.
