After the ending the regular season as the third ranked team in the final USCAA Coaches Poll, the anticipation of whether postseason play awaited Berea College basketball was next on the checklist. Today, the wait finally ended, as the USCAA announced the seeds and brackets for the 2016 USCAA Women's Basketball National Championship in Uniontown, PA and the team got good news.
On the USCAA's radio announcement of the Divison I women's basketball seeds and brackets, the women's basketball team were announced as the #3 seed. They enter the tournament with a 14-11 regular season record, with a 4-0 against USCAA opponents this season. Adriana Williams enters the tournament as the fifth leading scorer in the USCAA this season at 17.7 pts/g, while Jaime Roberts comes in ranked fifth in three point field goal percentage at 40.2%.
This is the second consective year the team has made the tournament. Last year, as a first time member of the USCAA, the team fell in the championship game. This year they look to finish the job and take home a championship trophy, with their first contest coming against the Rochester College Warriors, the number six seed. Rochester ended the regular season with a 16-14 record, and played one common opponent with the Mountaineers, Saint Mary of the Woods College. Berea defeated them 98-64 in January, while the Warriors defeated them twice, 86-79 and 103-69. In looking at points per game between the two teams, Berea finished sixth while Rochester finished eighth, with 67.3 and 65.8 respectively. The game will take place on Wednesday, March 2nd at 11:00 AM.
The USCAA Basketball National Championships kick off with the Skills Competition at the Penn State Fayette Main Arena on March 1st at 12:00 PM, followed by the All-American Banquet at 6:00 PM at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. Tickets for the tournament and banquet are available at uscaa.ticketleap.com. Play begins on March 2nd with championship games being held on March 5th.
