Mountaineers Beat College of Wooster 77-56

Wooster, OH- The women's basketball team returned to the court this afternoon, taking on the Wooster College Fighting Scots in the Nan Nichols Classic.

The opening segments of the game saw the teams exchange baskets before Kiley Barnard's three-point basket gave the Mountaineers the last lead change of the game at 12-10. Five straight points from Bri Lanham helped Berea maintain a four point advantage with 4:10 remaining in the first quarter. After Wooster cut the lead to just two, Kristen Barnes three-point jump shot extended the Mountaineers lead to five points, 20-15. By the end of the quarter, Berea pushed their lead out to double digits thanks to a free throw from Barnes, to make the score 29-19.

The score fell to single digits as the clock in the second quarter ticked down, until a Jaime Roberts basket from behind the arc pushed the Mountaineers advantage back out to 12 points, 38-26. Berea saw the score drop below double digits again until a three-point basket and a free throw from Lanham helped the Mountaineers go to the locker room for halftime with a 47-34 lead.

Four points from Lanham as the second half began pushed the Berea advantage to 14 points, making the score 51-37. Two layups from Nakeisha Greene and Barnes made the score 55-39 in favor of the Mountaineers.

As the fourth quarter opened, Berea led 59-46 before going on a 10-3 run to move their lead to 20 points, 69-49. Roberts' second three-point basket of the day gave the team a 75-53 lead with 1:39 left, as the Mountaineers went on to the win the game by a score of 77-56 and moved their record to 2-0.

Lanham finished the game with a double-double, including career-highs in both points (27) and rebounds (10), while also finishing 3-3 from the three-point line and 8-10 from the charity stripe. Bethanie Williams also recorded a double-double for Berea finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Barnes and Greene were two other Mountaineers to finish in double digit points, with 12 and 11, respectively. Barnes led the team in assists with five.

The team returns to the court tomorrow as they play their second game in the Nan Nichols Classic. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM against the Capital University Crusaders at 1:00 PM. Live stats can be seen here.
