Wooster, OH- After a 21 point victory in their opening game of the Nan Nichols Classic, the women's basketball team returned to the court to play in the concluding game. Today's opponent was the Capital University Crusaders.
Two missed shots and a turnover resulted in a 9-0 run to begin the game for the Crusaders as 7:42 rolled on the clock in the first quarter. Berea put their first points on the board when Bri Lanham capitalized on a Nakeisha Green offensive rebound. Both teams went scoreless over the next few minutes, before four three-point baskets from four different Mountaineers helped the team going on a 12-4 run and pull within two points of Capital, 16-14. The end of the quarter buzzer saw Berea trailing 18-14 as they entered the second quarter.
Kelsey Tippitt's basket from behind the arc pulled the Mountaineers within one point of the lead before the Crusaders scored the next four points to take a 22-17 advantage. After falling behind by seven points, Berea chipped away at the deficit and Jaime Roberts' three point basket with 4:55 remaining before halftime cut Capital's lead to just three, 26-23. The offense for the Mountaineers stalled as the time continued to tick off the clock and the Crusaders used a 10-2 run to go into the intermission leading 36-25.
Berea scored five of the first seven points of second half to make the score 38-30. The shots would not continue to fall for the Mountaineers though as Capital pushed their lead out to double digits again. Berea went into the final quarter trailing by fifteen points, 49-34.
Kristen Barnes three-point jump shot pulled the Mountaineers within 12 points in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, 51-39. The comeback attempt by Berea fell short as a 15-2 run by the Crusaders over the last few minutes of the game helped Capital leave the Nans Nichol Classic with a 66-48 victory. Tippitt and Kiley Barnard led the Mountaineers in scoring with 10 each. Tippitt and Lanham finished tied for the lead in rebounds with four each. Lanham also led the team in steals with three while Barnes was the assist leader with three.
The team returns to the court with a 2-1 record on Tuesday, November 22nd at the Seabury Center as they welcome Midway College. Tipoff on Roland Wierwille Court is set for 5:30 PM.
