Berea, KY- Led by Bethanie Williams with 24 points and the aid of three other Mountaineers scoring double figure points, the women's basketball team walked off the Roland Wierwille Court with a 83-63 victory against Marygrove College.
Poor shooting held the Berea offense back in the first quarter as the team went 5-15 from the field and headed to the second quarter with a 14-9 advantage. The ball started going through the net for the Mountaineers in the second quarter as the team used three baskets from behind the arc by Williams and a layup by Nakeisha Green to go on an 11-0 run and take their first double digit lead of the game, 30-16. Berea went into the halftime intermission with a 38-26 lead.
The defense for the Mountaineers continued its strong showing as they held Marygrove to just 26.7 shooting in the third quarter. The lead was cut to ten points before a 15-0 run sparked by back-to-back three-point baskets from Kiley Barnard helped push Berea's advantage to 25 points, 57-32. The team scored 24 points for the second consective quarter to head to the last ten minutes of the game ahead 62-38. Jaime Roberts shot from behind the arc and seven straight points from Green gave the team a 74-54 lead. The team used twelve second chance points on eleven offensive rebounds to walk off the court with the victory.
Along with Williams, Barnard (15), Green (15) and Roberts (13) finished in double digits points. Greene also finished with a team-high 10 rebounds, the first double-double of her college career. Roberts led the team in assists with five while Kelsey Tippitt poked away three steals.
The team will get a week off before they return to the court, as play against USCAA opponent Saint Mary of the Woods College on the road. The game is scheduled for Saturday, Decembmer 3rd with tip-off at 2:00 PM.
