Berea, KY- In what was a close contested game from the moment the ball was tipped off, #7 Berea (5-2) outlasted the Georgetown College Tigers on the Roland Wierwille Court 65-56.
Sophomore Kiley Barnard opened the scoring for Berea as she took a pass from sophomore Bethanie Williams and converted it into a three-point basket to give the team a 3-1 lead. Georgetown took the lead over the next few minutes before freshman Bri Lanham hit a three-point basket of her own to push the Mountaineers ahead 10-9. A layup from junior Jaime Roberts followed by a second three-point jump shot from Lanham gave Berea a 16-13 advantage heading into the second quarter.
When the score became tied at 16 in the opening minutes of the second quarter, the Mountaineers used a 10-0 scoring rally which included back-to-back three-point jump shots from Lanham and sophomore Kelsey Tippitt to go ahead 26-16. The last three minutes of the first half saw the Tigers go on a 10-0 run of their own to tie the game 26-26 at the intermission.
The tie on the scoreboard was broken by Georgetown before Williams' jump shot from behind the arc gave Berea a 31-30 lead. The seventh lead change of the game saw the Tigers score five straight points before the Mountaineers took the eighth and final lead change of the game off 9-2 scoring run which included four three-point jump shots from four different Mountaineers, moving ahead 43-37. Roberts layup to end the third quarter gave the team a 45-41 lead heading into the final quarter.
Free throws from Tippitt gave Berea a seven point advantage, 52-45, in the opening of the fourth quarter. As the Tigers continued to attempt to take control of the lead, back-to-back three-point baskets from Roberts extended the Mountaineers lead by eight points, 58-50 with 2:44 remaining in the game. Barnard and Williams hit a pair of free throws as time came off the clock and the team walked off the court with their fifth win.
The offense for Berea was paced by Roberts' 20 points, along with Lanham's 14 points and Williams' 13 points. Lanham led the the team on the boards with nine rebounds, including six on the offensive end, along with finishing as the team leader in assists with five.
The team returns to the road for their next game as they travel New Albany, IN to take on Indiana University Southeast. The game is scheduled for Thursday with tip-off set for 5:30 PM. Follow all the action here.
