Berea, KY- The women's basketball team, ranked fourth in USCAA Division I Women's Basketball, used four double-doubles and double-digit scoring from seven players to demolish USCAA opponent, the Saint Mary of the Woods College Pomeroys, 117-75.
The opening quarter saw a contested matchup between the teams as two Bri Lanham free throws gave Berea their first lead of the game 4-3. A 10-2 scoring run by the Pomeroys gave them their largest lead of the game at seven, 13-9, before eight consecutive points from back-to-back three-point baskets from Bethanie Williams and a jump shot from Zacchea Small pushed the Mountaineers ahead 14-13. One of Kristen Barnes' five made three-point jump shots gave Berea the final lead change of the game and sparked a 13-3 scoring rally over the last 2:33 of the quarter to send the Mountaineers into the second quarter with a 27-16 advantage.
The lead fell to single digits in the beginning of the second quarter until Nakeisha Greene, who finished with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, put the Mountaineers ahead by ten, 32-22. At the 5:56 mark of the second quarter, Berea saw their lead stretch out to 17 points as Barnes' two free throws went through the net to make the score 40-23. Saint Mary of the Woods pulled back within 11 points of the lead before the Mountaineers clamped down on defense and held the opponents to just two points over the last 4:21 before halftime, scoring 11 points in that same timespan to head into the intermission ahead by 20 points, 55-35.
Berea opened the third quarter on an 17-5 run, breaking the 30 point lead barrier when Jaime Roberts' three-point basket gave them a 72-40 advantage. Roberts' free throws later in the quarter gave the Mountaineers 80 points for the game and the team cruised to the fourth quarter ahead 86-53.
Dalilah Price's jump shot with 4:49 remaining in the game pushed Berea to 100 points for the third game this season, moving ahead 101-63. The team took their largest lead of the game of 42 points with 1:40 until the final buzzer and the Mountaineers walked off the court with the same margin of 42 points, 117-75, notching their largest margin of victory of the season.
Barnes led the scoring efforts for Berea with 25, while also finishing with five rebounds and six assists. Williams was the second leading scorer on the team, finishing with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds. Kiley Barnard added 17 points and three assists while Roberts finished with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists. Lanham and Small also finished the games with double-doubles, collecting 12 points and 14 rebounds and, 10 points and 12 rebounds, respectively.
Berea (8-5) returns to the court tomorrow afternoon as they travel to take on Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, OH. Action is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM.
