Wilberforce, OH- The women's basketball team, ranked #4 in the most recent edition of the USCAA Division I Women's Basketball Coaches Poll, returned to the road this afternoon to take on the Wilberforce University Bulldogs.
Wilberforce scored the first four points of the game as the Mountaineers got on the board with a Bethanie Williams jump shot to make the score 4-2. An 8-2 run by the Bulldogs put the Mountaineeres down 12-4. Berea cut the lead to just four on a 7-3 run with baskets from Nakeisha Greene, Kristen Barnes and Williams, making the scoreboard read 15-11 in favor of Wilberforce. The teams headed to the second quarter with the Bulldogs leading 17-11.
The next ten minutes of the game saw the opposite of the first quarter as the Mountaineers showed their dominance on defense and the offense took over the game, as a Kiley Barnard field goal sparked a 7-0 run which gave Berea their first lead of the game of 18-17. The Bulldogs briefly took back the lead before Bri Lanham's three-point basket gave the Mountaineers a lead they never relinquished and began a run of 17 straight points, putting Berea ahead by 15 points, 35-20. The Mountaineers held a 35-25 lead as the teams went to the locker rooms for halftime. Berea's outscored the opponents 24-8 in the second quarter.
Greene scored the first five points of the second half as the Mountaineers moved ahead 40-25 at the 7:04 mark of the third quarter. With the score 40-27 and 4:02 remaining in the quarter, a 10-3 scoring run started by Barnard put Berea ahead by 20 points, 50-30, as the third quarter ended.
The largest lead of the game came in the fourth quarter off of Lanham's made field goal to move ahead by 22 points, 52-30. Jaime Roberts hit a jump shot with 4:02 remaining in the game to put the Mountaineers over 60 points, making the score 61-39. Berea went on to win the game 63-45, winning their third straight game.
Williams and Greene finished as the team leaders in points with 11 each. Greene also finished with 10 rebounds, completing her third straight double-double, along with two steals and four blocks. Barnes and Roberts added 10 points each to the scoring efforts for the Mountaineers. The team finished with 12 steals on 19 turnovers.
#6 Berea (9-5) gets a couple days of rest before returning to the road on Thursday as they compete in the Lady Mustangs Showcase hosted by Mid-Atlantic Christian University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
