#2 Berea Wins Opening Game in USCAA Classic Against Florida College

Berea, KY- The women's basketball team, ranked as the #2 team in USCAA Divison I Women's Basketball, returned to the Roland Wierwille Court to host the USCAA Classic Tournament. Their first opponent was the #6 Florida College Falcons.

Berea started off the scoring with a three-point basket from Bethanie Williams which quickly pushed out to a 6-0 lead. With 4:27 remaining in the first quarter, the Mountaineers took their first double-digit lead of 10 points off of a pair of free throws from Bri Lanham to make the score 15-5. Kiley Barnard's layup gave the team a 14 point advantage, their largest lead of the first half, 24-10. Berea headed to the second quarter with a 27-15 lead.

An 8-4 scoring rally by the Falcons brought them to within eight points of the lead, 31-23, before a Nakeisha Green jump shot pushed the Mountaineers advantage back out to double digits. Berea saw their lead dwindle down to five points with 2:06 remaining in the first half but Kelsey Tippitt drew a shooting foul on a Florida College player and converted her two free throws to give the Mountaineers a seven point lead, 43-36.   Berea went into the halftime intermission with a 46-38 advantage.

The Falcons opened the second half on a 5-0 run to cut the Mountaineers lead to just one point, 46-45. A Jaime Roberts assist and three-point jump shot sparked 18-5 scoring run over the remaining eight minutes of the third quater to head to final stanza with a 64-50 lead. 

A 10-4 run by Florida College bought them back within eight points of the lead, 68-60, before a run of six of the next eight points scored for the Mountaineers by Kristen Barnes put the team ahead 75-61. Berea walked off the court with their seventh straight win 81-65. 

Lanham led all scorers with 16 points to go along with five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Williams added 15 points to the scoring efforts, also adding nine rebounds to her stat line. Greene was the third player in double figures scoring 14 points while finishing with nine rebounds and three blocks. Zacchea Small was the assist leader with four assists. 

#2 Berea returns to the Seabury Center this evening for their second matchup of the USCAA Classic Tournament against #7 Silver Lake College on the Roland Wierwille Court. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 PM.
