Berea, KY- #2 Berea returned to the court this evening after competing earlier in the day to play their second game in the USCAA Classic Tournament in the Seabury Center. Tonight's game saw them go against the #7 Silver Lake College Lakers.
Jaime Roberts and Bri Lanham scored the first four points for the Mountaineers, moving ahead 6-2 on Zacchea Small's layup. Silver Lake pulled within one point though with 4:35 left in the first quarter, 6-5. Back-to-back three-point jump shots from Lanham sparked a 14-4 run, giving Berea a 20-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Lanham finished with 13 points in the quarter and was a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc.
Kiley Barnard's three-point shot pushed Berea's advantage back out to double digits after the Lakers cut it to seven points, 23-13, to begin the second quarter. Silver Lake scored the next four points to pull within six points of the lead before Bethanie Williams' three-pointer made the lead nine points. A 6-1 run by the Lakers decreased the Mountaineers lead to just four points, but another three-pointer from Williams along with a layup from Barnard gave Berea a 32-23 halftime lead.
Scoring eight of the first twelve points of the second half helped the Mountaineers push their advantage to 13 points, making the score 40-27. Silver Lake cut the lead to single digits again but a 16-8 scoring rally over the last 6:58 of the third quarter pushed Berea ahead by 18 points, 56-38.
Back-to-back possessions of three-point baskets from Barnard and Kristen Barnes helped the Mountaineers hold a 19 point advantage, 62-43, as time ticked off the clock in the final quarter. Lanham's three-point jumper at the 3:07 mark gave Berea a 20 point lead, 69-49. Their largest lead of the game came with 2:29 remaining in the game when Roberts hit two free throws to put the team ahead by 22, 71-49. The Mountaineers walked off the court with a 72-57 victory, their eighth consecutive win.
Five players for Berea finished in double figure scoring, led by Lanham's 18. Williams (13), Roberts (12), Small (10) and Barnard (10) were the other Mountaineers in double digits. Greene led the rebounding effort with 10 rebounds while Barnes and Barnard finished as the leaders in assists with four each.
#2 Berea (14-5) come back to the Roland Wierwille Court tomorrow for the second day of the USCAA Classic Tournament. Their opponent tomorrow afternoon is The Apprentice School.
