Berea, KY- The women's basketball, who stayed pat as the #2 ranked team in the USCAA, returned to the Roland Wierwille Court for their final game of the USCAA Classic. Today's contest in the Seabury Center saw Berea go up against #9 The Apprentice School Lady Builders.
Apprentice took a 6-0 lead to begin the game before four straight points from Nakeisha Greene made the score 6-4. The scoring run continued for the Mountaineers as Kiley Barnard made the streak 10 straight points and a four point advantage with her back-to-back three-point baskets, making the score 10-6. Following a Lady Builders basket, another Barnard three-point jump shot along with Bri Lanham's free throws put Berea ahead by seven, 15-8. The score as the first quarter ended read 17-12 in favor of the Mountaineers.
The score became tied in the opening minutes of the second quarter before Barnard's fourth three-point basket of the game gave Berea a 20-17 lead. After a Bethanie Williams layup made the score 22-19, Apprentice went on a 11-0 run to take a 30-22 advantage. The last four points of the first half went in favor of the Mountaineers but they trailed as the teams headed to halftime, 30-26.
A three-point play by Williams followed by a pair of free throws from Lanham in the beginning of the third quarter gave Berea the lead back, 31-30. The lead did not last long for the home team as the Lady Builders moved ahead by four points with 7:45 left in the third quarter. Kristen Barnes three-point play along with Zacchea Small's jump shot brought the Mountaineers to within one point of the lead, 37-36. Berea regained the lead 42-41 off of Jaime Roberts three-point jumper and took a 44-41 lead heading into the final stanza on Greene's jump shot.
A two point lead in the fourth quarter shot up to five points from a basket and free throw from Greene to make the score 49-44. Apprentice threatened the lead again cutting the Mounties' advantage to two points before Roberts gave the Mountaineers a five point advantage 52-47. A jump shot from the Lady Builders with 4:43 remaining in the game was the last basket they scored as the defense clamped down and Berea hit free throws down the stretch to win their ninth game in a row 57-49.
Greene led all scorers with 15 points to go along with her 17 rebounds, finishing with her sixth double-double of the season. Barnard finished with 14 points, including 4-6 from beyond the arc.
#2 Berea's next game will be on Wednesday as they welcome Wilberforce University to the Seabury Center. A earlier season matchup between the two teams saw the Mountaineers win 63-45. Tipoff is set for 5:30 PM on the Roland Wierwille Court.
