Berea, KY- Ranked as the number two team in the USCAA as the at-large bids approach for the USCAA Tournament, Berea returned to the Roland Wierwille Court this evening. They welcomed the Bulldogs of Wilberforce University to the Seabury Center for the Carbon Neutral "Green" Game.
The game started off with a 5-0 Mountaineers run thanks to two free throws from Bri Lanham and a three-pointer from Bethanie Williams. A 7-2 run by the Bulldogs tied the game at seven each, which began a streak of four ties over the next two minutes. Each time though, the Mountaineers broke the tie with baskets from Williams, Kristen Barnes (twice) and free throws from Jaime Roberts. As the quarter progressed, Berea saw themselves leading 21-17 as the second quarter started.
Wilberforce took the lead a little less than two minutes into the the second quarter, 24-22. Trailing by four, a Kiley Barnard three-point basket pulled the Mountaineers within one but were the team was unable to regain the lead. With 58 seconds remaining in the first half and trailing 38-35, a 6-2 run which included back-to-back three-point baskets from Roberts gave the Mountaineers a one point lead, 41-40, as the teams went to halftime.
Williams' three-point jump shot to open the second half put Berea ahead 44-40 before four straight points from the Bulldogs tied the game at 44. The lead briefly changed before Zacchea Small's three-point play sparked a 11-0 run to give the Mountaineers a 55-46 advantage. Small's free throws with 49 second left in the third quarter gave Berea a 10 point advantage before going to the final quarter leading 61-53.
The eight point lead the Mountaineers had to start the fourth quarter dwindled to three points by the 7:02 mark, 65-62. Three points was the closest Wilberforce pulled within though as a Barnes three-point basket ended a 13-2 run for Berea, putting them ahead by 14 points, 78-64. Their largest lead of 17 points came with 1:44 remaining as Williams hit a layup to make the score 84-67. From the 7:02 mark on in the fourth, the Mountaineers outscored the Bulldogs 21-9 and went on to win the game 86-71, winning their 10th game in a row.
Williams led the team in scoring with 24 points and added 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Small (19), Barnard (15), Barnes (10) and Roberts (10) rounded out the scorers in double figures. Lanham was the assists leader with four.
