Berea, KY – The Berea College women's soccer took on the Earlham College Quakers at home this afternoon. With a strong performance from their offense the Mountaineers were able to grab the 5-2 win over Earlham and increase their record to 1-1 for the year.
The Mountaineers came ready to play and scoring their first goal only 20 seconds into the first half with a penalty kick from Keisha Guffey. Berea's Rebecca Schimidt struck next with an assist from Jacquie Zimmerman off a indirect kick to give the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead. Earlham scored the next two goals to tie the game 2-2 with 6 minutes left in the first half. Berea's strong offense in the last 6 minutes of the half lead to two more Mountaineer goals. The first was made by Maria Fernanda Pena with an assist from Sohara Perez and the second from Stevie Riedley with the assist from Perez. Berea held onto a 4-2 lead going into the second half.
The Mountaineers picked up right where they left off and with 38:16 left in the game Berea found themselves lining up for another penalty kick. This time it was Kortney Halliburton who was able to find the back of the net on the penalty kick, giving Berea a 5-2 lead. The rest of the game went scoreless and at the final buzzer the Mountaineers grabbed the 5-2 win over Earlham.
The Mountaineers travel to Louisville, KY on September 7th to take on the Spalding Golden Eagles at 4:00pm.
