Anderson, IN - The Women's track and field team competed in the Anderson Invitational this past weekend. Berea took 6th place as a team in a field made up of mostly NCAA Division III as well as some NAIA schools.
The meet started with the 4x200m relay where the Mountaineer squad of Cassie McFadden, Layne Callow, Jenna Hughes and Rebecca Dixson took 3rd. Mcfadden turned her attention to the 60m semifinals where her time of 8.30 earned her a spot to the finals where she would finish 4th in a time of 8.27. On the field event side, Senior LeAnna Luney took 8th place in the women's shot put. Simone Brown finished 3rd in the women's high jump and 5th in the triple jump.
On the distance side Gabriella Sabino set a huge personal best in the 5k running a time of 19:42, finishing 2nd place. This marked the first time Sabino had ever broken the 20 minute barrier in the 5k. Layne Callow once again ran away from the field and took first in the 800m run with a time of 2:26.45. Freshman, Jenna Hughes finished right behind Callow to get Berea the 1-2 finish and also set a personal best of 2:29.5. Erin Gonterman made her debut in the the 3000m run and finished with an impressive 3rd place. Gonterman's time of 11:08.07 broke the school record of 11:08.80 set by Kyle Schula in 1982.
The meet concluded with a fantastic women's 4x400m relay race that had Berea and Anderson running step for step with each other most of the way. The Mountaineer relay team was made up of Callow, Dixon, Hughes and Grace Callow. Their time of 4:17.83 was good enough for second place finishing less than a second behind host Anderson University.
The Mountaineers travel back to the University of Indianapolis to compete in the Tom Hathaway Invitational on February 13th. The meet is set to start at 12:30.
