With emotionals of the team riding high coming off a bid to the 2015 USCAA Volleyball National Championship and the seniors competing in their last home game for senior night, the Mountaineers looked to gain some momentum with a win against Midway College in their last regular season match of the year as the championship tournament approaches.
Both teams got off to a quick start in the first set as the two teams exchanged points, but a service ace for Berea turned the set in their favor and the team used eight kills to help them them to cruise to a 25-18 win.
The Blue Crew started the second set off quickly as they turned a 5-1 lead into a 13-5 advantage and caused a Midway timeout with a 16-5 lead. Midway mounted a minor response after the time out but Berea held on to win the second set 25-18.
The Eagles came out in the third set and took a 7-3 lead. Berea would not fold though as they went on a 6-2 run and tied the game 9-9. The two teams exchanged the next two points, making the score 10-10, before the Mountaineers went on a 5-1 run and gave themselves what seemed like a nice cushion with a 15-11 lead, causing a Midway time out. The Eagles returned from the time out though and scored 4 straight points to tie the game at 15. The rest of the match saw the score go back and forth until Berea was staring a Midway set point down 21-24. The team persevered and took the next four points to take a 25-24 lead. Midway tied it 25-25 but Berea took the next two points, with the 26th point coming from a long furious rally, to take the set 27-25 and win the match 3-0.
The Mountaineers were lead in kills by senior Kyra Robinson and junior Simone Brown with five each. Freshman Bailie Parker led the team in in digs for the second straight game, totaling 12. The assist leader for Berea was senior Megan Keller with 13. Brown also led the team in blocks with four block assists and one block solo. The win moves the team to 16-13 as they move on to postseason play.
"It was a fun and competitive match for us and gives us some good momentum as we head to play in the USCAA Volleyball National Championship in New York. It was nice to send out seniors out with a win as well," said head coach Sonya Petroski.
Berea will be back in action as they travel to to Canton, NY to compete in the 2015 USCAA Volleyball National Championship hosted by SUNY Canton as the #6 seed. The Mountaineers first taste of action will begin at 1:00 PM on Thursday in pool play as they take on #10 seed New Hampshire Technical Institute.
