Berea, KY - The Berea College women's volleyball team took on fellow USCAA member Carlow University in game one of the 2016 USCAA Battlefield Classic. The tournament will host a total of eight USCAA schools with each one playing four games. The Mountaineers dropped a 3-2 nail-biter to the Celtics on day one of tournament play.
In the first set Berea jumped out to a quick lead and held on to win 25-21. Both teams battled hard in the second set but the Celtics took the set 25-21. Carlow held the momentum and ran away with the third set 25-12, giving them a 2-1 advantage. In the forth set, Berea hit the court ready to play and was able to tie the match 2-2 with a 25-16 win. With the game on the line, both the Mountaineers and the Celtics played a thrilling fifth set, but in the end the Celtics took the set 15-13, giving them a 3-2 victory over the Mountaineers.
Claire Mueller finished the game with 11 assists and 29 digs. Bailie Parker lead the Mountaineers in digs with 42 total. Grace Callow led Berea in kills, dropping 7. Leading the way in blocks was Isabelle Haverty with 5 block solos adn 1 block assist.
Berea will hit the court three more times September 24th on day two of the USCAA Battlefield Classic. Their first game is scheduled to start at 10:00 AM where the Mountaineers will face Florida National University. In their second match Berea will take on the defending USCAA National Champions Florida College at 4:00 PM and to end the day, the Mountaineers will face Johnson and Wales University (NC) at 6:00 PM.
