Saint Mary of the Woods, IN- Berea College's volleyball team returned to the court this afternoon in the second day of Saint Mary of the Woods USCAA Tournament. The team finished the first day of the tournament 1-1.
Their first match of the day took place against the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks. Berea fell 3-0 to the Scarlet Hawks, 25-15, 25-10 and 25-17. Isabelle Haverty finished as the leaders in kills for the team with seven while Claire Mueller had 13 assists for the match. Mueller tied with Bailie Parker in digs with 11 each while Grace Callow led the team in blocks with two block solos.
The team's second contest of the day was against the Warriors of Rochester University (Mich.). The match between the two teams started out close, until Berea scored five straight points to lead 8-3. Rochester kept the set close though and eventually closed out the set with a score of 25-22. The second set started out the same for the Mountaineers, as the team led by four points 11-8 in the beginning of the set. As the teams moved deeper into the set though, Berea could not hold on to their lead as the Warrior took a 2-0 lead with a 25-23 score.
In the third set, the Mountaineers score four of the first five points but the Warriors came back and took a 6-4 lead. The momentum continued in favor of Rochester as they won the third set by a score of 25-12 and won the match 3-0. Leading the team in kills for the contest was Grace Callow with seven. The team leader in assists for Berea was Mueller with 19. Defensively, Destiney Balser led the way in digs with 18 and Haverty finished the game with two block solos to lead the team in blocks.
The team gets a week off before they return back to the road to compete in a Tri-Match at Hanover College in Hanover, IN. Their first match at 3:00 PM is against the host, Hanover College. Following their first match, they will play Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 5:00.
