Cincinnati, OH- The volleyball team played their final game of the Charlie Wrublewski Tournament earlier today as they took on the hosts, the Mount St. Joseph University Lions.
The opening set saw a closely contested match as a 9-9 tie occurred on a kill by Isis Hill. Mount St. Joseph went on a point streak which saw them lead 21-13 before going on to win the first set 25-16.
The first point of the second set went to the Mountaineers as a kill by Katherine Gonterman gave the team a 1-0 advantage. An 8-3 scoring run by the Lions pushed them ahead 8-4 before a service ace by Addie Bowman cut Berea's deficit to just three. A few errors by the Mountaineers helped Mount St. Joseph move out to a 14-9 lead before Kristen Barnes, the team leader in kills, scored a point off a kill to bring Berea within four points of the lead. The host Lions went on a similar scoring streak to the first set which put them ahead 21-13 before the Mountaineers scored 10 of the next 13 points to pull within one point of the lead, making the score 24-23. The score became tied at 25 off a Barnes kill before an attack error by Mount St. Joseph gave Berea a 26-25 advantage. Intense moments of action saw the score go back and forth but ultimately the Lions broke the final tie by scoring the final two points of the set to win it 34-32.
The momentum from the second set did not carry over in third set for the Mountaineers, as a 1-1 tie turned into an 11-4 advantage for Mount St. Joseph. The offensive outburst by the Lions continued on in the set as seven errors by Berea helped Mount St. Joseph walk off the court with a 25-13 third set win and a 3-0 match victory. Hill led the way on offense for the Mountaineers with 10 kills to go along with 17 assists from Alexandra Wilkins. Balser was the defensive leader with 11 digs.
Berea returns to the court next Saturday, September 16th as they play in a tri-match hosted by Kentucky Christian University. Their first match will be against the host at 11:00 AM followed by the other participating team, Midway University, at 1:00 PM. A livestream of the game against Kentucky Christian can be seen here.
