From the Appalachian foothills to the South Carolina low country, that is the trip that the Berea College cross country programs made this weekend, as they headed to the coast to compete in the USC-Beaufort Sand Shark Invitational.
The event featured 650 runners representing 74 schools from throughout the southeastern United States including programs from NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA ranks.
For the women, Mercy Kershner again was the swiftest Mountaineer. The senior's time of 19:18.47 in the 5K event was good enough for an overall finish of 48th. The women's other finishers were:
- Gabriella Sabino - 20:07.41 - 95th
- Erin Gonterman - 20:36.28 - 120th
- Gabrielle Sawyer - 20:53.42 133rd
- Megan Hale - 22:01.17 173rd
- Olamide Adejuma - 22:08.09 178th
- Esther Omolola - 23:37.97 211th
Savannah College of Art and Design, currently the 17th ranked team in the NAIA Women's Cross Country rankings, were the team champions.
Both the Men's and Women's cross country team's next event will be the biggest, the 2014 USCAA National Championships set for Friday, November 7, in Syracuse, New York.
