Berea, KY – The women's cross country team opened up their season at home with the 1st annual Berea/Centre College Jamboree. The Mountaineers finished 2nd place out of 8 scoring teams, 16 points behind team champion Centre College, with an average team time of 12:35 for the 2 mile course.
The Mountaineers placed 6 runners in the top 20 with Junior Erin Gonterman leading the way. Erin's time of 12:22 placed her 5th overall. The next 3 spots also belonged to Berea with freshman Jamie Welch finishing 6th (12:22), Gabriella Sabino in 7th (12:32) and Dove DeNigris in 8th (12:36). Freshman Caitlyn Roberts rounded out the scoring for Berea with a 16th place finish and a time of 13:02. Other finishers for Berea were Jenna Hughes finishing in 19th place (13:09), Hayley Clark 27th (13:24), Delaney Williams 28th (13:24), Ivanna Sabino 34th (13:39), Megan Hale 45th (14:07), Sydney Kyker 46th (14:07), Olamide Adejuma 67th (15:15), Meghan Kramer 72nd (15:35), Kendra Humphrey (15:42), Monica Galic 75th(15:43), Riley Lanham (76th (15:46) and Jillian Kendall in 83rd(16:52).
The Mountaineers and Colonels started a new tradition at this 1st annual Berea/Centre meet. The two teams were scored separate as a dual meet and the winner was awarded with "the cup". This trophy will travel back to the winner's campus each year. The trophy will travel to Danville as the Colonels topped the Mountaineers by a score of 23-33 in the dual meet scoring.
"I was really proud of determination these ladies showed this weekend" said Head Coach Jakubowski. "Since it was only a 2 mile race the goal was to get out fast the first mile and put ourselves in position to win the race and they did that perfectly."
The Mountaineers are back in action next Saturday, September 10th when they travel to the Centre College Invitational.
