Byron Wimphrie was named Head Coach of the Berea College women’s basketball program in June 2026.

Program Impact:
Since taking the reins, Wimphrie brings more than 20 years of coaching experience and a proven track record of turning programs into champions. Most recently as Head Girls Basketball Coach at Walhalla High School (S.C.), he led the program to back-to-back South Carolina state championships (including the first girls’ state title in school history), multiple region championships, and deep postseason runs (Elite Eight, Sweet Sixteen). Wimphrie was named South Carolina State Coach of the Year (2025–26) and has earned multiple Region Coach of the Year honors while developing numerous All-State and All-Region student-athletes.

Previous Coaching & Leadership Experience:
Wimphrie’s career includes collegiate coaching stops at Charleston Southern University (NCAA Division I) and Southern Wesleyan University (NCAA Division II), plus extensive high school head-coaching experience. He is recognized for strong player development, relationship-building, and an emphasis on academic and personal growth for student-athletes.

College Coaching & Athletic Administration:
At the collegiate level, Wimphrie served in coaching roles that contributed to program development, recruiting, and on-court success. His leadership emphasizes culture-building, character development, and sustained competitive performance.

Playing Career:
A former collegiate point guard, Wimphrie played at Southern Wesleyan University (2006–2009) following a brief stint at Charleston Southern.

Byron and his wife, Brittany, reside with their four children: Elynn, Banks, Townes, and Oakie.
