BEREA, KY – The Berea College (3-2) triumphed over Johnson University 82-71 at the Seabury Center, giving them back-to-back wins after losing a heartbreaker in overtime against Campbellsville-Harrodsburg at home.
The Mountaineer's continued their hot shooting from the previous game, shooting 47.8% from the field and 34.6% from three against the Royals. They went 16-21 from free throws. The Royals also had trouble defending the Mountaineers in transition, with the Mountaineers out-scoring the royals 28-11 on fastbreak points. The Mountaineers were out-rebounded by the Royals 52-44 but were able to score more points in the paint 32-28.
Junior guard Torell Carter (Whitsburg, KY), had a team-high 27 points and added 10 rebounds to have his second double-double for the season. Carter shot an impressive 11-18 from the field and 5-7 on the line. Terique Miller (Richmond, KY), was right behind Carater, with 25 points, along with 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. Miller led the game in 3-points made with 5.
The Royals were led by Cody Jones, who had 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 1 assist. Ethan Loveday followed and helped his team by putting 13 points on the board, 4 rebounds and 1 assist.
After a very slow start in the first half which saw the Mountaineers go into halftime down 43-39, the Mountaineers came out of the half with vengeance. The Mountaineers went on a 10-point run around the 12 minute mark of the second half and pushed their lead up to as high as 16. The Royals continued to chip away at the lead but the Mountaineers were able to hold on for the win, 89-81.
Up next, the Mountaineers will host Boyce College on November 26th. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Roland Wierwille Court.
