Berea, KY. - The Berea women's volleyball hosted two matches Saturday afternoon at the Seabury Center. The Mountaineers faced Piedmont College in the first game and Kentucky Christian in the second game.
Piedmont started the first set off hot with scoring six straight points before Berea took away their hot streak by scoring three points of their own. The Lions didn't let up though and took the set 25-10.
The second set started off with the two teams exchanging points with Piedmont holding a slight edge. After a Lion service error, Berea cut the lead down to four. Piedmont answered and went on a scoring terror for a 20-7 score. The Mountaineers didn't go away. After another service error, Berea went on a scoring run, 7-1, to bring Piedmont's lead to 24-18 before a Lions' kill sealed the second set.
During the third set, Piedmont jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Berea answered for a 5-4 score. The teams battled back and forth with multiple lead changes before the Lions took control and finished Berea's comeback for the third set win (25-19) and the match.
Berea's Kristin Barnes had thirteen digs along with her teammate, Eliza Lavin, obtaining ten digs. The Mountaineers had fifty-three digs compared to Piedmont's sixty-three digs. Carolina Robles had four kills in the game and Berea had a total of fifteen kills compared to thirty-nine kills by Piedmont.
Berea's second match against Kentucky Christian was close throughout the first set with the Mountaineers staying right with Knights. Multiple tie scores resulted during the set, before Kentucky Christian recorded two kills to take the set win, 29-27.
Berea struggled to find their groove in the second set and the Knights took full advantage. The second set ended with Kentucky Christian winning 25-15 for a 2-0 lead.
The third set was very similar to the second and the Knights easily took the 25-14 win, for the 3-0 victory over the Mountaineers.
Berea's Hannah Headrick played a great game recording eight kills and 10 digs for Berea. While Kristin Barnes and Carolina Robles of Berea had six kills apiece. Berea had twenty-eight kills to Kentucky Christian thirty-seven kills. Madeline Hicks and Eliza Lavin had nine digs apiece. In all, Berea had fifty-three digs compared to Kentucky Christian's seventy digs.
Up next for the Berea Mountaineers will be Covenant College. The Mountaineers will travel to Covenant on Tuesday, October 23 starting at 6 p.m.
