Berea Drops OT Heartbreaker to Asbury

Box Score

Mountaineers lose 3-2 in double over-time thiller to Asbury University.

Sometimes regulation is just not enough.  That was the case last night as Berea College hosted former KIAC rival Asbury College in men's soccer action.  Berea began the first half with a steady offense push that was thwarted by the Eagle defense into a slow, physical back and forth field position battle between both teams.

The Mountaineers finally broke through the Asbury defense when forward Rafael Mendoza (JR/Phoenix, AZ) scored at the 26:15 mark of the first half, which was then followed by a second goal just ten minutes later by Chris Gaughan (FR/Newnan, GA) beat the Asbury keeper after a beautiful pass from Mendoza. After the break, the back and forth stalemate returned as the Asbury defense worked to stop Berea and the Blue Crew defensive unit worked feverishly to keep the Eagles out the net.  Asbury's offense kicked into overdrive  scoring two quick goals (76th and 80th minutes) late in the second half to force overtime.

The first overtime looked much like the early parts of the previous halves - the defensive stalemate continued with neither side scoring.  The second overtime would be different as Asbury struck pay-dirt eight minutes in to extra stanza to end what had been an extremely physical, emotional and wonderful contest between bitter rivals.

The Mountaineers will have some time to recover, as they are not back in action until Saturday, October 11 when they travel to western North Carolina and a contest with USCAA member Warren Wilson College.
