Box Score 3 Berea College volleyball's run at USCAA National Championships came to an end today with a straight set loss to the #2 ranked team (USCAA Coaches Poll) Rochester College in the National Quarterfinals.
The Mountaineers punched their ticket out of pool play as the number two seed after they defeated Alfred State University in the morning match. Alfred State took the first set by a convincing score of 25-17. BC was not going to down without a fight, as they came roaring back from 19-20 deficit to score six straight points and force the third and deciding set. BC and ASU traded point for point and run for run. BC took command on the 8-6 side change, scored three more points and then coasted home for the upset win. The Mountaineers were led offensively by Taylor Ashworth who knocked down a team high 10 kills. Aliana Fox and Sydney Short led the way for the defense with four blocks and 13 digs respectively.
BC then took on Tennessee Temple in their final pool play contest. As hot as Berea was versus Alfred State, the opposite was true versus the Crusaders of TTU as they swept BC 25-23 and 25-20. Berea was led offensively by Nicole Baker with eight kills and defensively by Ashworth who registered 10 digs. The loss to TTU was meaningless in terms of the pool outcome as Berea was assured its position after defeating Alfred, the only thing that remained in question was whom they would play.
Rochester College would be the opponent for the third time this season, and for the third time RC would defeat the Mountaineers. BC had no answers for the Rochester attack, and they struggled to get around their block. Berea was led by Ashworth and Simone Brown with six and five kills respectively.
The Mountaineers will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Pikeville University, before returning home for their season finale and Senior Day on November 8th and a 1:00 pm match-up with Kentucky Christian.
