BC Volleyball Downs UPike

Box Score

The Berea College volleyball team made the long drive through mountains to take on the University of Pikeville on Thursday night; proving to be rude quests as they knocked off the Bears in four sets on Senior Night.

The Mountaineers defeated UPike earlier this season in a tight three set match in Berea.  This edition of the match-up looked exactly the same as BC jumped out to big early lead, with the Bears make a late run before falling 25-22.  The second set was all UPike as the Bears, served well, blocked great and pounded ball after ball to the ground winning 20-25.

BC would come right back in the third set with Taylor Ashworth and Kyra Robinson each amassing four kills to lead the Mountaineers to within one set of match of the victory as they won by a score of 25-23

The fourth set saw the Bears take early control and the Mountaineers playing catch up; and catch up they did.  Despite being down as many as eight points in the fourth set the Blue Crew chipped away score two and three points for every one point that UPike could add to their total, until they pulled even at 23-23.  Junior setter Megan Keller got an ace to get to game point.  What happened next was an epic rally with the ball changing sides a total of 15 times with blocks, tips, great digs, spectacular saves and big swings all over the court.  That was until Robinson put down a ball out of the middle that the Bears could not handle and the match was over - Berea winning 25-23.

Robinson was dominate in the win for Berea as she registered 11 kills on 17 swings for a .647 hitting percentage.  She was followed by Ashworth and Simone Brown who each collected nine kills.  While on the defensive front Nicole Baker collected 22 digs, and Sydney Short corralled another 16.  Brown's block was massive on the night as she collected six total blocks (four solo and two block assists).

The Mountaineers will play their final match of the season on Saturday at 1:00 pm when they host Kentucky Christian University.  It will be senior day, as Kaitlynne Smith will play her last contest in Berea blue.
