Berea, KY - The Berea women's soccer team picked up an impressive home victory Saturday against Wesleyan College. The game was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, but the Mountaineers got a key goal from Madilyn Hord in the second overtime to take the 2-1 win. Caroline Heberle scored the first goal for Berea, while Jade Fulkerson earned the win with one save.
Berea had most of the offensive advantages during the first 45 minutes of play with eight shots to Wesleyan's two. The Mountaineers' offense finally solved Wolves' goalie Carlee Dykes at the 41:50 minute mark, when a pass from Bailee Vanover to Heberle gave Berea the 1-0 lead that the Mountaineers took into halftime.
Starting the second half, Wesleyan could not find an answer for Berea's tough defense and the offense kept the pressure on the Wolves. With less than four minutes to go, Wesleyan snuck one by Fulkerson to tie the game at one apiece. Neither team was able to find another goal before the end of regulation and the teams headed into overtime.
The Mountaineers had the 4-1 advantage in shots during the first 10 minute period, but again neither team scored. The second overtime started and after a foul from the Wolves, Hord planted the ball and fired a strike that flew by Dykes for the 2-1 conference victory.
Berea dominated the offensive aggressiveness, out shooting the Wolves 25-8 and holding the 8-7 edge in corner kicks.
The Mountaineers are back in action Wednesday, when Berea heads to Oakland City for a non-conference match-up at 4:30 p.m.
