LAGRANGE, GA. – The Berea College volleyball program began the season on the road with a loss to the LaGrange Panthers 3-1. Freshman Deanna De La Torre shined for the Mountaineers in the loss recording 18 kills and 17 digs in the 1st game of the season and her colligate career. Sophomore Adrienne Roberts was able to add 32 assists for the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers kept the Panthers close throughout the 4 sets in the game. The Mountaineers lost the 1st set 26-24 after coming back from a 6-point deficit in the set. The Mountaineers were then able to fend off a late push by the Panthers, winning the 2nd set 25-22 after leading the match by 8 at one point in the set. In the 3rd set, the Mountaineers almost overcame a 8-point deficit, but the Panthers were able to hold off the comeback from the Mountaineers to win the 3rd set 26-24. In the 4th set, the Panthers were able to beat the Mountaineers 25-21 to shut the door on any chance of the Mountaineers pulling off a comeback win.
The Mountaineers fared well statistically but were overmatched by the Panthers in killed 59-52. The Mountaineers caused more errors than the Panthers 31-27, and the Mountaineers were less efficient on their attacks by 5 percentage points than their opponents.
The Mountaineers will be back in action Tuesday (March 9th) at 7 pm to play against the defending USA South Conference Champions.
